All New PING GMax Irons

It was once a folly to release new golf club lines in the middle of the season, but this outdated philosophy now falls to the wayside. PING has released its latest game-improvement irons, the GMax series.

PING defined the game-improvement club category three decades ago with its perimeter weighted PING Eye 2s, which became legendary for helping middle- and high-handicappers survive mishits and get balls airborne. A generation later, golfers still swear by their PING Eye 2s, setting the bar high for the brand’s engineering wizards.

The solution at PING has been to segment the player-improvement category with a range of clubs designed for the novice up to those that can be wielded by low handicappers looking for superior control. As proof of their superior technology, PING as a stable of PGA Tour pros that include Bubba Watson, Louis Oosthuizen and Lee Westwood, among others. The new GMax clubs seem to slot into the handicap range of players in the low double digits who are looking to challenge 80 more consistently. As a result, PING promises that its latest creation will be its longest and highest flying irons yet..

Examining the Powertrain

For those who like to look under the hood, know that the super-charged performance comes from a proprietary heat treatment applied to the clubface that toughens the steel and makes it possible to make the face thinner at the perimeter – more than 30% thinner. PING calls this COR-Eye technology and concludes that the resulting springy face generates up to three miles per hour more ball speed on contact. The shape of the clubface gives the leading edge more of a rounded look, keying with the utility woods that are so easy to hit.

PING GMax COR-Eye Technology

The all new cavity structure contains a concealed Custom Tuning Port that connects to the sole of the club. With this deeper position, the center of gravity on each iron is moved lower and farther back, which increases the moment of inertia. Ok, so this could be a bit of manufacturer mumbo-jumbo, so you’re probably wondering: what does this mean to me and how can it help my golf game? The result of this combined technology gives the new PING GMax irons extreme forgiveness and much higher-launching results, giving your shots a better chance of getting further down the fairway and more importantly, keeping them ON the fairway.

PING GMax Sole Geometry

PING GMax Sole Geometry

What’s more, the wide sole design on the GMax locates the center of gravity to further maximize forgiveness, which simply gives you even more of a better chance for accurate irons shots that not only launch higher, but also land softly to hold greens. The sole geometry also reveals an enhanced leading edge, more trailing edge relief and a refined edge to optimize turf interaction.

There is much more with the PING GMax for gear heads to dissect – for instance, the tricksters in the lab have affixed the aluminum badge on the cavity back with a sliver of dampening tape to produce a more ear-pleasing send-off to the golf ball. Nevertheless, the bottom line is greater trajectory and ball flight distance.

What Does the Set Makeup Look Like?

The PING GMax starts with the 4-iron and moves up through the set of wedges. PING devotees will recognize a slightly longer blade length to go with the familiar offset. The mid-irons have been outfitted with lighter swing weights to attempt maximum clubhead speeds but, like all PING clubs, this is just a guideline rather than a rule. The clubs can be tweaked throughout the bag for swing weight, offset, bounce, lofts, and shaft lengths – at PING there is no such thing as a standard order, as everything is custom fitted. PING always offers spec charts to compare its new lines with existing club lines.

Factoring in the many state-of-the-art improvements this respected company brings to its newest source of pride, it’s safe to bet that the PING GMax irons may turn into another classic club that players will favor years down the line.

Like previous PING iron sets, the new GMax is available in both graphite and iron shafts. Here’s where you can check out each version:
